Live Tutorial
Here is the icon that is used for
Live Tutorial:
Below the Join Live Tutorial icon you'll see who the tutor is and how many people are in the tutor's live queue.
A live tutorial is a one-on-one, interactive tutorial. Everyone connected may watch the tutorial, but only one student at a time may interact with the tutor. When a tutor is in and conducting a live tutorial for your class, a Join Live Tutorial icon similar to the one above will appear. Click on Join Live Tutorial and the WWWhiteboard will open automatically.
As a Student...
The WWWhiteboard will open in view-mode. This mode allows you to watch the tutor help other students. You can remain in view-mode for the entire tutorial, or you can submit a question by clicking on the Ask A Question button at the bottom of the WWWhiteboard. When submitting a question, you are placed into question-mode. While entering your question on the WWWhiteboard in question-mode, you will not be able to see what is happening in view-mode, nor will anyone else be able to see you entering your question. After you enter your question onto the WWWhiteboard, click on Submit Your Question. This will place your question into the tutor's queue and return you to view-mode. (If you do not have time to wait for the tutor to answer your question, click on Mail at this point. You'll be able to retrieve the answer from the Q & A Center later.) When the tutor gets to your question, you will be notified by a bell and placed into interactive-mode. Your one-on-one tutoring takes place in this mode. Remember that everyone else connected is in view-mode, so do not put any private information up on the WWWhiteboard. When your question is finished, the tutor will indicate that you are done. You can print out your question via Session -> Print, and then return to view-mode by clicking on View Tutorial.
As a Tutor...
As a tutor, you have a link in your Left Navigation Frame titled "Tutor my Groups". This link will load the page where you can select which groups you want to tutor for. There are also other buttons and tools located here, which are related to tutoring. These buttons are Start Tutorial, Takeover Room, Update Tutorial, and Post-Process.
Start Tutorial
To begin a live tutorial for your classes, check the box next to the classes you want to include and click on Start Tutorial. The WWWhiteboard will open automatically.
As the tutor, you control the tutorial. When there are no questions in your queue, students who are in view-mode will still be able to see what you are putting on the WWWhiteboard. When a student submits a question, a bell will ring. If you are not currently in a tutorial, click on the Next button at the bottom of the WWWhiteboard to preview the question. Should the question be inappropriate, click Reject and the student's submission will be rejected before the students who are in view-mode ever see it. If the question is appropriate, click Accept to accept the question and begin interaction with the student who submitted it. If there isn't enough time to finish the question with the student during the live tutorial, click on Mail to send the progress you've made as a new question to the Q & A Center so that you can finish answering it offline and the student can retrieve their answer at a later time. After you finish with the current student and if you would like to save the question and place it into the archive for that class, click on Save to send it to the post-process queue. When you are finished with the student, click on Done to wait for, or move on to, the next question.
Takeover Room
When another tutor disconnects from a tutorial room that has active questions, that room goes into a "hanging" state, where the rooms can be taken over by another tutor. To view the rooms that are hanging, click on the Takeover Room button. A new browser window will pop up and display which rooms, if any, are waiting to be taken over. If you are supposed to take over for another tutor, simply click on their link. The window will then display the WWWhiteboard with the active questions. Classes that you are not authorized to tutor will not be included in your tutorial when you take over a room.
Update Tutorial
You can tutor multiple classes at different times throughout your live tutorial. When it is time to begin an additional class or classes, check the box next to their name and click Update Tutorial. When it is time to end tutoring for one or more of your classes, uncheck the box next to their names and click Update Tutorial. Upon clicking Update Tutorial a new browser window will open with the message that your tutorial has been updated. There is no need to close your WWWhiteboard. To quit accepting new connections to your tutorial room, simply unclick all classes and click Update Tutorial. This will not affect your current session or queue.
Post-Process
If you saved questions during your live tutorial because you wanted to archive them, they are put into the Post-Process queue. When you are finished with your live tutorial, click on Post-Process to view the WWWhiteboards that you have saved. Click on Next to see the next tutorial board and Edit to edit the tutorial. At this point, you can alter both your information and the student's information. This is your opportunity to spell check, line equations up, and organize the tutorial. After you're done editing the question, click Archive and type in a subject title. Repeat this process for each question in your queue. Once you have post-processed all of your saved questions, you can browse them in the Tutorial Archives for that class.
